This crochet unicorn lovey blanket pairs a round blanket base with sweet amigurumi details. It makes the ultimate soft, handmade gift for a new baby. I found this free pattern on the Hobbii website and instantly fell in love. It struck the sweet spot of project balance: enough flat rows to stay relaxing, with just enough amigurumi construction to keep things interesting without feeling overwhelming.

I was able to pull the entire piece straight from my existing yarn stash, sizing up my hook and choosing an extra-soft yarn for the body so it would have that cuddle-friendly drape for tiny hands. The pattern finishes the mane with soft pastel rosettes and adds embroidered sleepy eyes for a sweet, gentle expression.

The original design had a different plan for the tail, so that was the one spot where I decided to improvise. I’ve seen so many octopus for preemie patterns that have those playful curly tentacles, and that bounce is what inspired me to track down a free curly tail pattern instead.
